LGBTQ+ Supports
Our region is home to a vibrant LGBTQ+ community
Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or as a local ally standing up for inclusion, everyone is on their own unique path to pride. United Way is committed to an open and inclusive community—this means helping create safe spaces where kids and families can talk about their experiences, be supported and represented.
Why Path to Pride?
We all have a role in creating a welcoming community. While many work to shed light on the stigma and discrimination LGBTQ+ people face, the challenges continue:
health risks
Youth who identify as LGBTQ+ face higher risks of suicide and substance abuse than heterosexual youth.
MARGINALIZATION
LGBTQ+ people in Canada experience marginalization— racism, poverty, homophobia and transphobia are all things that negatively impact mental health.
seeking support
Members of the LGBTQ+ community face challenges in accessing essential services like counselling or social groups—places that should be inclusive.
Supporting the LGBTQ+ community—every step of the way
United Way East Ontario believes that everyone in Prescott-Russell, Ottawa, Lanark County and Renfrew County deserves the chance to be heard, included, and supported.
That’s why we started Path to Pride, a 100% local initiative sharing stories to celebrate diversity and raise funds to support kids and families on their journeys.
Sharing your Path to Pride
The path to friendship
Together, best friends Charlie and Warner are standing up for LGBTQ+ rights and speaking out about what it’s like to be transgender.
For a community to be great, it has to be great for everyone
People in the LGBTQ+ community may face challenges along their journeys—from interactions at school, family relationships, workplace inclusion, or simply feeling comfortable in their own skin. Thanks to our donors, United Way can invest funds where they are needed most and will have the greatest impact. Together we can ensure our LGBTQ+ community thrives.
