But for some, learning and succeeding in school can be a real struggle.<\/p>\n<p>While there are many reasons for this, among them is the unsettling reality that many of Ottawa\u2019s kids deal with <strong>toxic stress<\/strong>, which can have damaging effects on their learning, behaviour and long-term physical and mental health.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b612eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6b612eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is toxic stress?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c73b5f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c73b5f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We all experience a certain amount of stress in our lives, and not all types of stress are actually bad for us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Positive stress<\/em><\/strong>, such as the stress experienced when facing challenges like meeting new people or first-day-of-school jitters, is actually essential for a child\u2019s development. The positive stress response tends to be short-lived and mild, and when children are emotionally supported with reassurance and protection, their experiences with this type of stress allow them to gain resilience\u2014helping them later on in life.<sup>[i]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Tolerable stress<\/em><\/strong>, such as that experienced when dealing with the death of a loved one, is a more severe type of stress. Thankfully, a child\u2019s brain will usually recover from this type of stress if they are protected with healthy relationships and strong social and emotional supports.<sup>[ii]<\/sup><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e900f71 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"e900f71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\"Toxic stress is different. It\u2019s caused by things like as abuse, neglect, extreme poverty, violence, household dysfunction and food scarcity[iii]\u2014hardships that can be detrimental to mental and physical health in the long term.\"<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34da0e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"34da0e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Toxic stress results in prolonged activation of the stress response. In a toxic stress situation, there is a lack of caregiver support, reassurance or emotional attachment, which prevents the buffering of the stress response and the return of the body to its normal functioning.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b7e7c0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b7e7c0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is toxic stress during a child\u2019s early years so dangerous?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d4dbfb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d4dbfb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Medical research has shown that early toxic stressors\u2014particularly those experienced during the first six years of life\u2014increase a child\u2019s vulnerability to outcomes such as unhealthy lifestyle, socioeconomic inequality and poor physical and mental health. Evidence also shows that toxic stress in these early years can actually result in permanent changes to the brain.<sup>[iv]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This is because the time between a child\u2019s birth and the moment they reach age six is a crucial period in their long-term development. \u00a0In fact, during these key years an infant\u2019s brain actually triples in size as the physical circuity of the brain is established.<sup>[v]<\/sup><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed4d70c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ed4d70c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Brain-development-grpahic-300x168.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-654\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Brain-development-grpahic-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Brain-development-grpahic.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f40fdf7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f40fdf7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Negative experiences during a child\u2019s early years\u2014such as those resulting from toxic stress\u2014are harmful to brain development and can have lasting, lifelong impacts.\u00a0 These impacts can include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), difficulty in the regulation of emotional responses and\u00a0behavior, psychosis, depression, and an increase in suicide attempts. Toxic stress can also result in poor health outcomes including increased risk of infections in children, alcoholism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, obesity, heart disease, and an increase in suicide attempts.<sup>[vi]<\/sup><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c2c0e87 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"c2c0e87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\"The powerful impact of toxic stress is clear. Early intervention and prevention strategies are needed to minimize serious long-term impacts.\"<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4b53cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b4b53cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How vulnerable are Ottawa\u2019s young children?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-812ee36 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"812ee36\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Early Development Instrument (EDI) gives insights into the health and wellness of senior kindergarten students across five domains that affect their development. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayottawa.ca\/are-ottawas-young-children-set-up-for-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Way uses data from the EDI<\/a>, along with data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neighbourhoodstudy.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ottawa Neighbourhood Study<\/a> (ONS), to better understand where Ottawa\u2019s most vulnerable kids are located. This allows us to effectively address the needs of our city\u2019s most vulnerable children.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffa75f9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ffa75f9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Based on these tools, we know that 25% of Ottawa\u2019s young children are vulnerable in one or more domains that affect their development when they start school.<\/strong> When we compare Ottawa to the provincial baseline of EDI scores, we see that our kids are falling behind significantly in two specific areas: social competence and emotional maturity.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ca5691 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"5ca5691\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>\"This is important, because vulnerability in these two areas are strong predictors of mental health challenges later in life.\"<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6768e42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6768e42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/screencapture-uwoco-maps-arcgis-apps-opsdashboard-index-html-2019-08-13-14_44_23-1024x495.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-656\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/screencapture-uwoco-maps-arcgis-apps-opsdashboard-index-html-2019-08-13-14_44_23-1024x495.png 1024w, https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/screencapture-uwoco-maps-arcgis-apps-opsdashboard-index-html-2019-08-13-14_44_23-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/screencapture-uwoco-maps-arcgis-apps-opsdashboard-index-html-2019-08-13-14_44_23-768x371.png 768w, https:\/\/unitedwayeo.mydev.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/screencapture-uwoco-maps-arcgis-apps-opsdashboard-index-html-2019-08-13-14_44_23.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-afa07c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"afa07c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In low-income areas of Ottawa, the need for support becomes even greater\u2014as areas with lower neighbourhood income are associated with poorer EDI scores.<sup>[vii]<\/sup><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da88ddd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"da88ddd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How can we work together to improve the outcomes for Ottawa\u2019s most vulnerable children?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f51f050 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f51f050\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>United Way is fortunate to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drpaul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Paul Roumeliotis<\/a>\u2014a passionate champion and advocate for early childhood development\u2014as a member of our Board of Directors. This is why it\u2019s essential that we work together to do everything we can to support healthy development in children\u2019s early years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7fc375c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7fc375c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">In Ottawa, significant segments of our youth populations are in situations of emotional distress:<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1b4289 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e1b4289\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n<li>More than 1,300 Ottawa students (4%) reported that they had attempted suicide in 2017-2018 and one in nine (11%) Ottawa students in grades 7 to 12 reported that they had considered suicide in the past year.<sup>[viii]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Since 2010, mental health emergency visits at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) have increased by 75%.<sup>[ix]<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>More than 50% of Ottawa\u2019s homeless population had reported a past diagnosis of mental illness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7bbcb22 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7bbcb22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Together with our donors, we help create nurturing, more stable and engaging environments where our city\u2019s kids can develop, learn and grow.<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2dc44d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f2dc44d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Here\u2019s how we do it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayottawa.ca\/how-olivia-overcame-her-greatest-obstacles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Parenting programs <\/strong><\/a>that improve overall infant\/toddler development and attachment relationships with mothers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayottawa.ca\/aurora-is-finishing-high-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Individual parenting sessions<\/strong><\/a> based on brain development research, targeted parent\/child interactive groups, attachment-focused parenting group programs and individual interventions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayottawa.ca\/a-fun-place-to-learn-and-grow-after-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Social skills programs<\/strong><\/a> that teach anger-management and problem-solving strategies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outreach services<\/strong> in shelters that connect parents and families with early intervention children education programs, culturally specific playgroups, after-school programs, and food security programs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedwayottawa.ca\/parents-helping-parents-through-lifes-difficulties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Intensive, individualized supports<\/strong> <\/a>for parents and families in crisis. This includes active outreach to highest risk families for referrals to services, helping to reduce socio-economic and psychosocial stressors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7ebead elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e7ebead\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>United Way also collaborates with incredible local initiatives to go beyond the stats and discuss with local experts what we\u2019ve learned, what it means, and what we should do about it.These organizations include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/neighbourhoodstudy.ca\/\">The Ottawa Neighbourhood Study (ONS)<\/a><\/strong>(led by the University of Ottawa), provides data on strengths and challenges for our city\u2019s neighbourhoods. This work allows United Way and agency partners to identify neighbourhoods that could benefit from more resources.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/parentresource.ca\/\">The\u00a0Parent Resource Centre<\/a><\/strong>and its\u00a0Data Analysis Coordinators (DACs) \u00a0provide innovative\u00a0support services within the early childhood sector by facilitating research activities, monitoring child outcomes, and enhancing capacity for evidence-informed planning.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.growingupgreat.ca\/\">The Ottawa Child and Youth Initiative<\/a><\/strong>envisions a community that is committed to supporting children and youth to reach their full potential.
